I started practicing yoga about two years ago as an outlet for the tension that builds up during my slightly stressful (yet totally fun!) job in digital marketing.

At first, it was terrible. What was relaxing about lifting those hips high up into the air while pushing your hands into the ground – all while stretching your heels to the ground? No, downward dog, I do not find you restorative.

After a few weeks of classes, though, I started to get it. Hips high, shoulders relaxed, and those heels finally made it down the floor. With a little time, effort and trial and error, I gained flexibility and strength – also known as results.

Stick with me here …

You’ve heard it before: SEO is not instant. It takes time and effort. You need to continuously build content on your site, link to other pages, and, at some point, just wait to hit Page One.

SEO is like yoga

Here’s how one of my favorite hobbies is just like your path to the top of Page One:

1. They both take patience.

Just like I didn’t have a perfect crow pose (or downward dog) on day one, you can’t expect to land right on Page One after you create a new page or post. It takes time for Google to crawl and re-index your site, but there are a few other online marketing strategies you can try in the meantime.

2. Balance is required.

Whether it’s standing on one leg in tree pose or using just the right number of keyword phrases, balance is necessary. Too many keywords and you’re creating spammy content that no one wants to read; not enough keywords and you’re not showing up in search. Try to find the right number to get results – and not fall over.

3. You need a strong core.

While you need a strong core to keep you up right, your SEO strategy needs a strong core. Write all the content you want, but if you don’t have the basics in place, your strategy is going to fall apart. SEO basics like meta tags will make sure that you have a good foundation to build on.

4. Strategy is key.

In yoga, class follows a flow for a reason. Certain poses stretch certain muscles and are meant to be done with counter poses. SEO is not random. Keywords are carefully researched in Google Keyword Finder to drive qualified traffic to a website.

5. You get results.

Eventually, you’ll be able to do that headstand – and your website will get to Page One. It just takes time, patience and practice. You may have to change your strategy to get there, but when you do, it’s well worth it. If more customers are finding your website, more customers are looking at your products and services and filling out your forms. It happens. It just takes a little work.
