At one point or another, someone has probably told you to work smarter, not harder. That’s good advice to carry with you, but when you’re working in a busy office it might be even better to think: work better, not longer.

Making the most of the time you spend at your desk is crucial, particularly if you want to steer clear of those dreaded late nights or weekend work sessions. A few simple changes at work can be just what you need to create more hours in your day!

Have a Routine…

No two people are going to function quite the same way in an office environment, and that’s okay. It’s important to play to your strengths, particularly when finding your rhythm in the office.

As a writer, the bulk of my time is spent writing and publishing pieces. Lately, I’ve been finding my sweet spot by writing first thing, and getting the bulk of my publishing done later in the afternoon. Once you find your rhythm, you’ll find yourself getting more done in the same amount of time.

It’s also key to see how different pieces of your routine can click together. For a lot of people, pairing the morning’s emails with a quick check of a favorite industry-related newsfeed is a great way to start things off. Anytime you can kill two birds with one stone without sacrificing your focus, it’s a good idea to take that route.

…But Don’t Be Afraid to Break It

There’s no such thing as a sure thing, and that applies to your routine, as well. The plan of attack that worked so well last month, last week, or even just yesterday might not work with your headspace. Allowing yourself to change things up as necessary not only helps you get the most out of your day, but also helps to keep things from feeling stale.

Similarly, don’t be afraid to toss an occasional wrench in the works when it feels right. A 10 minute walk around the parking lot to unclutter your head is well worth it when the alternative is staring at a blank document for the next hour!

Get Organized and Think Ahead

Your approach to organization is going to be as unique as your routine. As long as you do have an approach to organization that works for you, though, you’re ahead of the game! Having relevant tools and information – whether they’re on your physical desk or your digital desktop – where you can access them quickly is bound to save on time and help you nail down productivity.

To bring your organization to the next level, try to think one step ahead. Before you leave on Friday, take an extra minute to straighten up your workspace. Trust me when I say that Monday Brett always appreciates it when Friday Brett takes the time to clean out his coffee cup before he goes home!
